What's New at the AWMA?

June 25, 2008

Pursuant to Article XI part (b)  of the AWMA By-laws, notice is hereby given that amendments will be proposed to Articles, II, IV, V, VI, VII and IX of the Constitution and Bylaws of the AWMA.  By specifying these articles, it also becomes possible for amendments to these articles to be proposed from the floor at the General Board Meeting on September 26, 2008.  While the majority of amendments will be of a mostly “housekeeping” nature, correcting poor phrasing or amendments to make different sections consistent, some of the proposed more substantive amendments are:  (1) remove the AD from the offerings section in Article II, (2) Further clarifying some of the Board of Inquiry procedures (Articles IV and V), (3) requiring full member clubs to carry insurance (Article V), (4) Requiring all members of the Executive Board to have titled a dog to at least IPO1 (Article VI), (5) clarifying some roles between the membership chair and treasurer (Article VII) and (6) “Mothballing” the role of the Assistant Regional Director (Article IX).   Full details of the proposed amendments will be provided to member clubs in July or August (more than 30 days prior to the meeting), and will be posted on the AWMA Discussion Board.

The AWDF is seeking input on their intent to offer American working dog titles later in 2008. When implemented, this program will be in addition to the existing VPG/IPO program. AWDF member clubs would be able to offer these titles at their trials. The AWDF titles would be governed by rules that are independent of the VDH. Draft rules are available for your review. AWMA members should send their comments to Anne Camper prior to January 1 for compilation and submission to the AWDF.

The 2007 AWMA Nationals are now a memory.  It was great to see everyone, whether you were there as a competitor or spectator.  Congratulations to Steve Gregalunas and Eli vom Teufelhund for winning HIT, high HOT, and high obedience.  Greg Doud and L’Flair Ot Vitosha came in second and also took high protection.  In third place was last year’s winners Wilson Rosa and Azzaro De Asturbox.  Mike Morgan and Bacchus Vom Drachenherz were in fourth place.  Sean Rivera and Bronson’s Fekkai Rouge took the honors as high scoring female and high tracking.  Helper’s choice award was taken by Brittany Laramore and Joker du Loups du Soliel.  Through these wins, Steve, Greg and Mike gain automatic slots on the FMBB team, with the remaining three slots to be determined by the point system.  Special recognition goes to Lily Westerhoff, our first junior handler, for showing us how it’s done and for being a cool, composed, professional handler.

John aka “Mohawk” Wiitanen and Paula Daigle are due tremendous thanks for hosting the event.  The stadium was beautiful and the tracking fields were as close to ideal as you can get.  The host hotel was extremely accommodating.  The draw night event was relaxed and fun, and each competitor received a very nice competitor’s bag filled with good stuff and a mug commemorating the event.  The judge’s dinner at John and Paula’s home was an event to be remembered.  The food was fantastic.  It was wonderful to be able to wander around and talk with people – so much better than talking to only the folks next to you at a sit-down dinner.  Even the weather cooperated.

Judging for the event (Alfons Van den Bosch, phases B and C; Raino Flugge, phase A) was tough but consistent.  They knew that the winners of this event would have slots on a world team and judged accordingly.  The critiques were explicit and you knew why you received your score.  The organization appreciates the effort that both of them put into ensuring that we had a first-class event.

April, 2007

The AWMA team to the AWDF Championships won the individual and team placements! Ivan Balabonov with Qenny ot Vitosha once again won the individual competition, leading the malinois team to victory. All but two of the dogs were handler/owner trained and many were very young, giving us even more hope for a competitive future!

The St. Louis group and the AWDF did a great job of hosting the competition. The trophies were beautiful. The stadium was brand new with astroturf and crushed rubber underneath. And even though there were rain showers, in general we had good weather. The tracking was unexpectedly challenging, and if you look at the scores, there were a substantial number of dogs that failed. Regardless, many of the malinois turned in nice scores, including high tracking.

Congratulations to everyone who competed. We look forward to seeing all of you in Michigan at the AWMA Nationals.
